Newer construction, 2000s forward. Erie has been one of the fastest-growing communities on the Front Range, and most of the housing reflects that. Builder-grade windows that work but were specified to a budget. The reasons homeowners call are efficiency, comfort, and wind-driven air infiltration rather than outright failure.
Older Erie and the surrounding rural properties. Genuinely old housing stock exists here alongside the new development, including farmhouses and homes that predate the growth entirely. Different work, often full-frame, sometimes repair.

Open terrain with nothing between you and the plains means sustained wind and wind-driven grit, and it does specific things to windows.
Weatherstripping wears out faster than the manufacturer’s rating suggests. Grit works into tracks and hardware until sliders bind and casements stop sealing. Air infiltration around the frame, rather than through the glass, becomes the actual source of a draft complaint. And on newer construction, builder-grade installation that would be fine in a sheltered location shows its weaknesses much sooner.
The important part: most of that is a repair, not a replacement. Weatherstripping, hardware, balances, and re-sealing at the frame are all fixable. A company that only sells new windows will diagnose all of it as a replacement, because that's the only tool they have.
